Accident Alert FAQs

Drive with confidence. Accident Alert ensures help arrives. Learn more in our FAQs for peace of mind on the road.

Accident Alert is a safety feature available on the Momentum App. It monitors your location and movements through the Safe DayzTM feature, and its primary purpose is to protect you and your loved ones in case of a car accident. This feature is designed to assist you as a driver or passenger in the car. In case of an accident, the App will automatically notify emergency services through the Safety Alert feature. They will receive your location details to provide you with the necessary assistance.
No one expects to be in a car accident, but unfortunately, they happen. With our Accident Alert feature, we can provide immediate emergency and medical assistance when you need it most.
To register and access the Accident Alert feature, you must be an active Momentum Insure car and home insurance policyholder. SafeDayzTM and Safety Alert need to be activated to achieve optimal functionality.
Accident Alert is only available to Momentum Insure car and home insurance policyholders who have activated SafeDayzTM and Safety Alert on the Momentum App.
The Accident Alert feature is free of charge. The only cost incurred will be data costs, which are subject to your network service provider.
No, Accident Alert does not require you to have a tracking device. Your phone acts as the tracking device by using your GPS sensor.
a. Download the Momentum App.
b. Create a profile. This will allow you to log in with the details you used on the Momentum website.
c. To activate your Accident Alert feature on the Momentum App, you must be an active Momentum Insure policyholder and have registered for Safe DayzTM and Safety Alert.
d. An Accident Alert notification will appear. Click on the notification and complete the required details.
e. Once complete, the Accident Alert feature will be activated on the Momentum App.
The Accident Alert feature continuously monitors your phone's sensor data to determine if a potential accident has occurred, such as rapid or sudden deceleration. Emergency responders will automatically be dispatched to your GPS location if this happens. To enable the Accident Alert feature to function as intended, you must register and remain registered for the Safe DayzTM and Safety Alert features on the Momentum App.
GPS, motion sensors, and accelerometers in your phone detect in real time if you have come to an abrupt halt or decelerated sharply. Your GPS location is also used to dispatch emergency responders in the event of an accident.
Yes, you must always have GPS enabled for this feature to work.
There are diverse types of road accidents, ranging from minor to severe or even fatal. Accident Alert relies heavily on the phone's sensors to detect certain accidents. Primarily, the technology used will detect accidents with the following scenarios:
  • The driver/vehicle is moving when the accident occurs. Accident Alert cannot detect accidents if the driver is stationary whereby another person/vehicle hits the driver.
  • The accident must result in a complete stop of the driver/vehicle upon impact. Accident Alert detects serious accidents that force the driver/vehicle to stop completely. If the accident is just a minor accident, sideswipe or low-impact contact that does not force the driver to stop upon impact, this will not be detected by Accident Alert.
Accident Alert can be disabled at any time on the Momentum App. When you're ready to enable the feature again, you can log on to the Momentum App to reactivate it. However, the feature runs in the background, so we recommend always keeping it activated because you never know when you'll need it.
The Momentum App prevents battery drainage by collecting data only when movement is detected. Battery use is, therefore, low when you are not driving. When you are driving, the battery use is comparable to that of other driving and navigation apps.
To preserve battery life, the Momentum App will stop collecting driving data. This feature will not work if your battery has 15% or less power.
The Control Centre agent will be in contact with you immediately after initiating Safety Alert.
Yes, ideally, it should work if all the required settings and permissions are in place and a journey is actively being recorded accurately.
Accident Alert runs in the background and only runs when Safe DayzTM has identified that you're travelling.
When registering for Accident Alert, you must supply your name, surname, contact number, email address, and medical information.
We request your medical information to determine which hospital will best suit your needs. Please provide the necessary details to ensure you receive proper care in the event of an emergency.
a. Location permissions: For the feature to work correctly, location services must always be enabled. This allows us to access the GPS and accelerometer sensors necessary to detect an accident and dispatch emergency responders to your location.
b. Background running permissions: This enables the App to record driving data and detect accidents while running in the background on your phone without you having to open the Momentum App.
c. Phone dialing permissions.
a. Unsupported device: Some phones do not have the sensors required to allow the Accident Alert feature to work. The accuracy of the Accident Alert is not fully guaranteed.
b. Data turned off or no signal: If data is turned off or there is no cell signal available, Accident Alert cannot detect the events and initiate the Safety Alert call.
c. Background service disabled: Accident Alert requires the Momentum App to be able to run in the background. This allows the App to collect data only when you're travelling and saves battery. If background service is disabled, the Accident Alert feature will not work.
d. Location: If the permissions are not set to "Always on."
e. Location services disabled: If location services are disabled on the Momentum App, the Accident Alert feature will not have access to the sensors on your phone that are required to detect an accident.
f. Low battery level and saving settings: The Accident Alert feature will not work if your battery level is less than 15% and if your phone's saving settings automatically stop background processes when your battery is too low, Accident Alert will not work.
g. The phone is off or not with you: If your phone is not with you or it is off, Accident Alert will not be able to help you.
h. Accident not severe enough: The accident was not severe enough to trigger the Accident Alert feature, for example, a minor fender bender.
i. Shortly after starting the journey: The feature may not detect any accidents that occur shortly after you have begun driving since the recording may not have started or the GPS signals may not have been sufficient.
j. Combination of features: An accident won't be detected if any one or combination of the Accident Alert, Safe DayzTM, or Safety Alert features are deactivated.
k. Accuracy of the location data: With respect to the travelling area or availability of strong signals, unstable/inaccurate GPS location may occur on mobile devices and can result in missing or delays in crash detection.
However, Accident Alert will require access to data when an accident has occurred to initiate an emergency response.
Detecting an accident involves analysing significant sensor data collected from your phone. The system has been carefully designed to accurately predict accidents while also avoiding false predictions that may occur, for instance, when the phone is dropped.

The prediction of accidents will never be 100% accurate, and Momentum Insure cannot guarantee that we will detect every single accident, but we will do our best.
Suppose an accident is not identified for any of the reasons listed in "What are the reasons why Accident Alert may not work correctly?" above. In that case, you can still manually use the Safety Alert feature on the Momentum App to request emergency medical responders to assist you and your loved ones at the accident scene.
The control centre's contact number will be displayed within the Safety Alert feature so you can dial it immediately once selected in instances where the Safety Alert feature is unavailable to you due to a technical error. Ensure that the Momentum App's phone/dialing permission settings have been activated for the feature to work.

If you have any queries or require technical support with the App, call 0860 999 932 or email [email protected]. Please provide your identity number/policy number or your email address so we can assist you in resolving your query.
There may be false alerts, but the system has been trained only to detect accidents that are of a certain severity to prevent false alerts. In the event of a false alert, the call centre will call you before dispatching any emergency medical responders, and at that stage, you can inform the call centre agent that it was a false alert. This will be fed back into the system to reduce the number of false alerts and improve accident predictions in the future.
If you don't answer the call, emergency medical responders will be dispatched to your location, as we will not know if it is a false alert.
No, the Accident Alert feature will only work in South Africa. Our emergency medical responders are only available in South Africa.
The emergency medical responders will stabilise you and/or your loved one at the accident scene. You will then be transported to the nearest hospital, either a public hospital if you do not have medical aid or a private hospital if you have provided or can provide your medical aid information.
As a client of Momentum Insure with access to the Accident Alert feature, you will receive full coverage for the cost of emergency medical response and transportation to the hospital in the event of an accident. Any additional medical expenses will be your responsibility.
It would depend on your location at the time of the accident, whether it is in a rural area or not. Usually, our response times are 10 - 20 minutes in a major metropolitan area. 20 minutes+ in rural areas.
You can test the Safety Alert feature on the Momentum App at no cost. This will ensure that the contact information you have provided is accurate and that the App can detect your location accurately.
Based on your location, the nearest emergency medical responder from a network of more than 1 800 vetted armed and medical responders nationwide will be dispatched to assist you.
The best position for your phone is on a flat, stable surface where the phone will not move around.
Accident Alert operates on your device, meaning it works whether you are driving or a passenger. If an accident is detected, you will receive a call for assistance. If emergency medical help is needed, responders will be dispatched to the scene. Standard procedures for emergency medical services will be followed to assist all occupants of the vehicles involved in the accident.
The Momentum App, through its Safe DayzTM and Safety Alert feature, automatically shares your current location details with emergency medical responders.
All personal data collected through the Accident Alert feature is secure and will solely be utilised to reach out and provide aid in the event of an accident.
No, the Accident Alert feature will only dispatch emergency response in the event of an accident. A claim for the incident will not automatically be logged. You must contact Momentum Insure to report the incident and log your claim.
